ABSTRACT
Forest is a large area of land where trees grow. Forest is useful in maintaining environmental balance for humans. Forests are categorized based on the types of trees in the forest. There are teak forests because the majority of trees in the forest are teak. Qualitative research not only understands the activities of researchers to get an overview or explanation, but also helps to get deeper explanations. Forest damage due to illegal logging occurred in the East Welai Village, forest damage occurred in forest areas which were mostly planted with teak trees. This also happened in the forest area on the slopes of Mount Batu Nirwala. The loggers were none other than local people who lived around the forest. In early 2000 the condition of Mount Batu Nirwala was bare without any tree stands. Natural disasters such as earthquakes began to hit the area around the forest. Drought disasters also occurred even in the rainy season. The water debit in the springs has decreased. This condition has prompted the awareness of the people living under the slopes of the mountain to carry out a conservation movement to restore the function of the Mount Batu Nirwala forest which has been a buffer for the ecosystem for the area below it.
